William E. Miley, age 85, passed away peacefully in the Harrington House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Walpole, Massachusetts on Monday, October 16, 2017. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 12, 1932, he was raised in Jamaica Plain and loved playing sports growing up. He graduated from Jamaica Plain High School, where he held the position of goalie on the school's hockey team. After graduation, Bill joined the Boston Typographical Union (BTU) and as a standout athlete became a member of the Type-O's Baseball Team, traveling all over the country.
After the start of the Korean War, Bill joined the United States Marine Corps, honorably serving his country. He was stationed in Korea for just over a year and upon his completion of service was honorably discharged in February of 1954, after earning the rank of sergeant. Bill returned to the BTU and served his apprenticeship at Wrightson Typographers in downtown Boston.
Bill married his loving wife, Patricia M. Barnes, on June 4, 1960 in Saint Cecelia's Church in Boston. The young couple made their home together and in the mid 1960s, Bill took a position with the Boston Globe. Bill and Patricia settled into their home in Roslindale in 1965, where they raised their family. As a devoted father, Bill loved teaching and mentoring his children, especially when it came to sports. He spent countless hours coaching them in the Parkway Little League organization and loved taking them to see the New England Patriots play in Foxboro, after he became a season ticket holder in the 1970s.
In addition to working at the Globe, Bill began taking classes to earn his bachelor's degree at Fitchburg State College. His college education led him to a teaching position within the Boston Public Schools, where he taught in the graphic arts department. Bill graduated from Fitchburg State College in 1977, and continued working in the Boston Schools teaching in the Industrial Arts Department, teaching woodworking and technology to many students over his 25 year career.
After his retirement in 1993, Bill enjoyed playing rounds of golf in a league at the Brook Meadow Country Club and playing in handball tournaments all over the country through the Boston YMCA. He loved traveling with his wife, making memorable stops in Aruba, Bermuda, Italy, Ireland, Las Vegas, and Alaska. Bill also took his sons with him to San Francisco, during one of his handball tournaments, a trip that they all remember well. Back at home, Bill enjoyed following the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and his beloved New England Patriots. He loved a good meal followed by a game of cards, always surrounded by his family.
Son of the late Ethel Miley, brother of the late David Miley. Beloved husband of Patricia (Barnes) Miley. Loving father of Linda O'Rourke and her husband Bob of Foxboro, David Miley and his wife Sandy of Raleigh, NC, Stephen Miley and his wife Mary of Foxboro, and Billy Miley of Walpole.
