Walter H. Songin

Walter H. Songin age 86 years died in the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham, Massachusetts on Thursday, September 22, 2011. Born in Walpole, Massachusetts on September 5, 1925, he was the son of the late Paul G. and Lenora M. (Koslowski) Songin. He graduated from Walpole High School with the class of 1943. Mr. Songin proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a Corporal. He served in the European Theatre of Operations with the 309th Field Artillery, 78th Infantry Division at the Battle of the Bulge

Mr. Songin was a life long resident of Walpole and a driver for US Steel and retiring in 1978.

He was a Commander and manager of the Walpole VFW Post 5188, for 33 years, and a member of the American Legion Thomas Crowley Post 104 in Walpole.

Mr. Songin loved hockey, he played during high school and on semi-pro teams. In high school he became a part of the most feared lines in WHS Hockey and helped secure the '42-'43 Bay State League Championship. He went on to play semi pro, the Massachusettts Ameatuer Hockey League and the New England Ameatuer Hockey League, where he was MVP and Leader Scorer for the Walpole Sweepers in 1964. He played on a U.S. Team that toured England, France, and Germany. In 1959, he was invited to represent the United States National Team, that went on to play in Russia. He finished his hockey career as a member of the Boston Bruins Alumni Team.

Beloved husband of Claire M. (Welch) Songin. Loving father of Jack Songin of Norwood, Mary Frisbee, Tommy Songin both of Walpole, Jeanne Moores of Norwood, Carol Corcoran of East Walpole, Timothy Songin of Walpole, Mrs. Judie O'Reilly of Salisbury, and Walter H. Songin, Jr. of Walpole. Cherished grandfather of 21 and great grandfather of 18. Brother of Harold Songin of East Walpole, the late Jennie Kunelius, the late Alice McGrath, the late Lenora Lincoln, the late Stella McCahill, the late Frederick Songin and the late Edward "Butch" Songin.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church East Street (Route 27) at Diamond Street Walpole on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 9AM. Visiting hours are Monday, September 26, 2011 from 4-8PM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home 48 Common Street Walpole. Interment will be in Saint Francis Cemetery in Walpole. Due to economic times, in lieu of donations and flowers, please send something Walter always cherished, which was a card because it would last forever.
