Walter B. Smith, age 91, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Care One in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on January 31, 1929, he was the son of the late Peter and Hilda (Betker) Smith. He was raised in New Brunswick, graduating from New Brunswick High School with the Class of 1947.
Following his graduation, Walter enlisted in the United States Air Force, proudly serving his county during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After more than twenty years of dedication to the Air Force, Walter retired in August of 1968, having earned the rank of Master Sergeant.
While on active duty in the Air Force, Walter married his beloved wife, Virginia M. Wolf, on May 7, 1966. Upon Walter's retirement, the couple made their home with Virginia's sister in Roslindale before making their own home in West Roxbury. While living in West Roxbury, Walter took a position with the Gillette Company in Boston, affording him the opportunity to move to the small suburban town of Walpole, Massachusetts. Walter continued to commute to Gillette for twenty-five years, earning the position of project leader before his retirement in 1994.
Throughout his life, Walter loved being outdoors. He searched out various fishing spots throughout the area, looking for the perfect spot to cast his fishing rod. Back at home, Walter spent countless hours in his backyard, ensuring his gardens and bushes were well cared for. However, most of all, Walter was a dedicated family man, who always put his wife and children first. As a young father, Walter oversaw the installation of a pool in his yard, and while he never jumped in, he maintained it perfectly for Virginia, Stephen, and Scott. In his more recent years, Walter lovingly cared for his wife, meeting every need and showing the meaning of devotion.
Beloved husband of Virginia M. (Wolf) Smith.
Loving father of Stephen H. Smith of Paxton, W. Scott Smith and his wife, Kathleen, of Hawaii, and Bill Smith of San Antonio, Texas.
