Thomas Francis McCarthy, age 88, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Born in Boston on June 15, 1935, he was the son of the late Thomas and Honora (Sexton) McCarthy. He grew up in the Roslindale neighborhood of Boston. Tommy proudly served in the United States Army. After the Army Tommy was a member of the Amalgamated Association of Street, Electric Railway and Motor Coach Employees of American and worked as a Carman for the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority until his retirement.
Tommy married his beloved wife, Mary Joan Regan, in October of 1962. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage. Together, they made their home in South Easton and eventually retired to the Cape. More recently, in January of 2023, Tommy moved to Walpole, Massachusetts to be closer to his family.
Throughout his life, Tommy was an avid sports fan. He looked forward to watching his beloved hometown teams, the Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins. He also enjoyed attending local high school and college sporting events, supporting the student athletes from the stands.
Tommy was very proud of his playing days with the Charlestown Townies, part of Boston Park League Football. His historical research of the league was a major contribution for the 2013 Boston Park League Football Reunion.
Tommy was the loving brother of Mary Fleming and her late husband, Leo, of Sherborn, MA and the late John McCarthy of Cambridge, MA. Tommy is also survived by his many extended family members as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Thomas' visitation on Thursday, August 31, 2023, from 9 to 10 AM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Blessed Sacrament Church, 10 Diamond Street, Walpole on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
