Shirley March Smith, a resident of Ft. Myers, Florida and Humarock, formerly of East Walpole, Massachusetts, passed away on February 7, 2016. Born Shirley Claire March on June 18, 1929, she was the only child of James Roland and Hattie Gladys (Simpson) March. She was a 1947 graduate of Westford Academy and a 1951 graduate of Leominster Hospital School of Nursing. As a young RN, she was employed as a visiting nurse, industrial nurse and ambulance nurse in Maine. Moving to East Walpole, Massachusetts, Shirley was a wife, mother and homemaker for many years while serving as a Director of the Walpole Visiting Nurse Association, and taking an active role in Girl Scouts and the Union Congregational Church. Shirley spent 20 plus years at Norwood Hospital being an RN mainly in the Ambulatory Care Unit, retiring in 1990.
On October 21, 1951 Shirley married David R. Smith, Jr. in addition to her husband, she leaves their two children Sue Anne Smith Bass (Larry) of Marietta, GA and D. Richard Smith, III (Melanie) of Rye, NY, five grandchildren: Larz D. Bass (Maria) of Arnoldsville, GA, Coral C. Bass (Jonathan Torkos) of Marietta, GA, Gardner R. Smith of New York City, and Eleanor W. Smith and Nathaniel C. Smith of Rye, NY. She also leaves the family mini schnauzer, Andy Rooney Smith.
Shirley will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother and nurse as well as accomplished, resilient and determined person. She also believed in teaching and conveying her knowledge to others. We were blessed to know and love her.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a graveside service in the East Walpole Cemetery on the Walpole/Norwood line on Pleasant Street in East Walpole on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: The Union Congregational Church, 55 Rhoades Avenue, East Walpole, MA 02032. Arrangements by James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, Walpole.
