Sara "Penny" (Mason) Murdock, age 74, passed away in the Ellis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Norwood, Massachusetts on Monday, October 16, 2017. Born in South Bend, Indiana on March 12, 1943, she was the daughter of the late William and Sara (Alterkruze) Mason. She spent her early years in the mid-west before her family settled in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. Penny graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1965, earning her bachelor's degree. After graduation, she settled in Connecticut, where she took her first teaching position.
While living in Connecticut, Penny met her husband to be, Dennis C. Murdock, through his cousin. They were married a short time later on August 11, 1966 in Lynnfield and after taking their honeymoon in Falmouth, they made their home together in Randolph. Penny took a teaching position with the Holbrook High School, however after purchasing a home on Union Street in East Walpole in 1967, she left the working world, transitioning into the role of a homemaker, raising and caring for her family.
As her children grew up, Penny returned to her teaching career, taking a position at Walpole High School, working with the METCO program. After fifteen years of dedicated service to the students in Walpole, she changed her career path, taking a secretarial position with HNU in Newton, before retiring as a secretary at the Billings Human Services in Norwood.
From the time she was married, Penny loved spending a couple of weeks on Cape Cod during the summer months. After her retirement, she spent the month of February in southwest Florida and found her love for travel, taking many cruises. Back at home in Walpole, she loved playing bridge with her friends or hosting parties and cookouts around the backyard pool at her home. Most of all, she was a devoted family woman, who loved hosting the holidays where her whole family would be together.
