MR. ROBERT L. "BOB" TRAVERS DIED ON FRIDAY, JUNE 23RD, 2006 IN HIS WALPOLE HOME SURROUNDED BY HIS FAMILY, after a 3 year battle with metastatic prostate cancer. He was 53 years. Born in Norwood, he was a lifelong resident of Walpole, Bob played Football and ran Track at Walpole High School and at Northeastern University. Walpole High School Class of 1971 and Northeastern University Class of 1976. One of Bob's best " claims to fame" was being asked to try out for the New York Jets during the summer of 1976 while playing semi-professional football.
Bob prided himself on his work ethic, putting himself through college while working 3 & 4 jobs at the same time. He loved his yellow lab , Rembrandt, all sports, especially enjoyed tennis, golf , fishing and his new passion for salt water fishing, the Red Sox, the Patriots, his children's games, their swim meets and all of their activities. One of Bob's best known passions , however, was his love of coaching. He enjoyed helping in any way and was widely recognized as the coach who could find the positives out of any negative situations. Whether it was softball, soccer, baseball, or basketball, he believed strongly in creating team spirit, teaching new skills and bolstering the kid's self-esteem.
He will be fondly remembered for his deep love and affection for family and friends, his kind and gentle spirit, his optimistic nature, his courage, his dogged determination, his giving of himself to others and his dignified way irrespective of life's circumstances.
Bob and his wife Patti have spent the last few years landscaping their home, first the front yard and most recently the backyard. Turn their backyard into a private haven, with a waterfall, pool , many plantings and much love.
Bob has been recently working for Iron Mountain in Boston, where he was a project manager for electronic data storage. Prior to that he worked in managerial roles in banking, financial and software industries.
Beloved husband of almost 30 years of Patricia "Patti" Hyland Travers. Devoted father of Tiffany K. Travers and Gregory L. Travers both of Walpole. Loving son of the late Christina (Lawrence) and Thomas L. Travers , Jr. Brother of Catherine McKnight of Walpole , his twin brother Richard L. Travers of California, Thomas L. Travers, III and John J. Travers both of Franklin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrate in Saint Timothy's Parish 650 Nichols Street Norwood on Wednesday, June 28th, 2006 @ 10AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours are Tuesday , June 27th, 2006 from 4pm to 8pm in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home 48 Common Street Walpole. Interment Saint Francis Cemetery Walpole.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Bob's memory may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute , for research on treatments for metastatic prostate cancer, C/O Dr. Kantoff 44 Binney Street Boston, Massachusetts 02115 or the Robert L.
