Robert Joseph Meers

March 23, 1925 — July 1, 2014

Robert Joseph Meers, Sr., age 89, died in his Sharon, Massachusetts home, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Born in Medford, Massachusetts on March 23, 1925, he was the son of the late George William and Mary Jane (Whelan) Meers, and graduated from Medford High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II in Company A, 9th Armored Infantry Battalion. In 1945, he was stationed in the European Theater of Operation, where he took part in the Occupation of Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Sergeant.

Robert raised his family in Brighton, Massachusetts, where they were members of St. Columbkille Church and he served on the Finance Committee. He spent a few years in Norwood, Massachusetts before settling in Sharon, where he was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows.

He was employed by HP Hood in the Data Processing Department, working with the first computers. In addition, he spent many years working in Men's Fine Clothing at Brooks Brothers.

In his younger years in Brighton, he loved spending time in his yard. He took great pride in having one of the nicest lawns in Brighton, which he watered in the evening to relax. Robert also had a small vegetable garden and grew amazing tulips. He enjoyed being a Pack Leader for the Cubs Scouts and coaching Little League while living in Brighton.

As his family grew, Sunday dinners became very important to Robert and his wife, Mary, as he loved spending time with his family. In his older years, he enjoyed traveling, shopping, and loved to nap in his chair at home.

Loving father of Robert Joseph Meers, Jr. and Katie Keung of VA, Ronald William Meers and his wife Kelly of TX, Richard David Meers of RI, Raymond Jay Meers and his wife Barbara of Sharon, Regina Marie Meers of Woburn, Robin Ann Caccavelli and her husband Michael of Natick, Rosemary Thomas and her husband David of Sharon, Randall George Meers and his wife Siobhan of Ireland, and Renee Patricia McCorkle and her husband Patrick of Woburn. Cherished grandfather of Andrew, Christopher, Hillary, Ashley, David, Carolyn, Jason, Seth, Lindsey, John, Chris, Derek, Jaclyn, Michael, Courtney, Matthew, Sammi, Ciaran, Eoin, Laura, Bobby, and Hannah, and great grandfather of Roman and George. Brother of the late George Meers, Katherine Littlewood, Eleanor Gearty, and Alice Carney.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Robert's Life Celebration on SATURDAY, July 5, 2014 from 2-6 PM and MONDAY, July 7, 2014 from 10-10:30 AM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Cottage Street, Sharon on MONDAY, July 7, 2014 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private in the Massachusetts National Cemetery at Bourne. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: South Shore Support Services, 210 Winter Street, Suite 104, Weymouth, MA 02188.
