Richard “Dick” Charles Humphrey, age 74, passed away on Saturday December 14, 2024, at Faulkner Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts with his loving wife and children by his side. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 14, 1950, he was the son of the late Robert M. and Eva M. (Colby) Humphrey.
Dick was raised in Dedham where he graduated in 1968 from Dedham High School. He met the love of his life, Judith L. Shellmer through friends, and he immediately knew that she was the one. The two married on May 20, 1972 in Saint Timothy’s Church in Norwood. They made their married home in Dedham for 5 years and welcomed their two children, Mark and Jessica. The family moved once more and made their home in Wrentham. Dick and Judy became fast friends with some other parents when he was coaching little league in Wrentham, and soon a tight group was established. He was a very involved Dad to his kids and their friends while teaching and coaching them. The crew would get together for holidays, cookouts, and kid’s parties, all pitching in spending time together.
Dick worked in autobody shops for several years and showed his skill at Boch Collision while Judy was attending nursing school. He spent his time in the garage restoring antique cars. He then started his own home improvement company, Dick Humphrey and Son where he was able to put his talents to work on additions and remodeling. His proudest job was the log cabin he built with and for his son in Norfolk in 2000. One of his later projects was renovating his beloved childhood home in 2012 back in Dedham. Around that time, he started stepping back from his role at his company and handing the reins over to his son, but was always around for guidance and advice.
When not hard at work, Dick enjoyed watching his favorite team, the Boston Bruins, at his home of 46 years in Wrentham. While hockey was his favorite, he also enjoyed bringing his kids and grandkids to a couple of Red Sox games every year and sharing his love of sports with them. Dick also played golf with his friends and was a season ticket holder for the New England Patriots for many years. He and Judy had a house in Harwich for whenever they wanted to escape to the Cape for a weekend. This became their full time home 6 years ago and Dick loved to jump onto the nearby bike trail and see the beautiful area.
Dick enjoyed woodworking and refinishing carpentry for many years. He was able to share that talent with his grandkids when he made them custom cornhole boards for family events. Family was the most important thing to Dick, and he loved spending as much time as he could with his kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews. He supported them by attending all of their sporting and school events, and they all loved learning from him.
