Raymond Frederick Zickl, MD age 72 years died suddenly on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Born in Staten Island, New York, he was the son of the late Frederick and Elizabeth (Healey) Zickl. He graduated from New Dorp High School in Staten Island with the Class of 1958; he graduated from the University of Notre Dame and from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He has been a resident of Wrentham for the past 10 years moving there from Sherborn and Norfolk.
Raymond F. Zickl M.D. was the definition of a life-long learner and teacher. His first thoughts were to become a high school math teacher until a close friend convinced him that his ideas and personality could make a difference in medicine. Deemed "The Professor," he practiced throughout his career as a true primary care physician starting well before this term became popular. He earned a medical degree from Georgetown University in 1966 and subsequently served his country as an officer in the United States Public Health Service from 1967-1969. He then moved to Boston where he began his practice in Internal Medicine in Norwood for over 40 years. He loved keeping up with his medical knowledge and his lively discussions around the hospital were legendary. He was a man of many public and private accomplishments including contributing research to the discovery of the Norovirus.
An avid sailor since childhood, he loved the ocean and enjoyed taking his sail boat out at the Steamboat Wharf Marina in Hull. He belonged to the Hull Lifesaving Rowing club and was in the process of completing a captain's course at USS Massachusetts. His curiosity inspired him to delve into any subject that peaked his interest, from baseball to woodworking to ancient languages.
He was the loving father of Lynette and Stacy Zickl, whom he loved and cherished, and devoted his unending support. He also leaves behind wife of 31 years Judith (Carlson) Zickl, inlaws Frank and E. Louise Carlson, as well as many close friends and colleagues.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the visitation on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 from 3pm to 7pm in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home 48 Common Street Walpole. Funeral services and interment are private. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to Hull Lifesaving Museum Post Office Box 221 Hull, Massachusetts 02045: http://www.lifesavingmuseum.org/donate.html. or Meals on Wheels 135 Ellis Avenue Norwood, Massachusetts 02062.
