Raymond E. Lane

Raymond E. Lane, age 87, passed away peacefully in his Walpole, Massachusetts home on Thursday, March 5, 2020.  Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on October 29, 1932, he was the son of the late George and Ingeborg (Huel) Lane.  He was raised and educated in the Jamaica Plain and Mattapan areas of Boston.  Prior to finishing his high school education, Ray enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country during the Korean War.  He was stationed in Germany for just shy of three years, where he met his wife, Frieda Wurzer.  She was working at a guesthouse where Ray and some of his buddies from the Army came into one evening and it was love at first sight.  They were married a short time later in 1953.  Ray was discharged from the Army in December of 1953, after earning the rank of Sergeant, and made his home in Norwood, Massachusetts, where he patiently waited for his beloved Frieda to join him. 

 

Ray decided to continue his high school education, taking classes at the Bennet Street Industrial School, focusing on woodworking.  His talent in the woodshop offered him the ability to build most of the furniture in his first home.  As he honed his skills, Ray was able to design and build his own house on Robbins Road, where he and Frieda made their home for the past 62 years.  His skills were noted by the Walpole Woodworkers, who offered him a position in their shop in Walpole.

 

Throughout his life, Ray worked with several companies in addition to the Walpole Woodworkers.  He spent twenty-eight years at Sears and Roebuck in the Fenway area of Boston before taking a position with Newton Wellesley Hospital in the maintenance department, where he worked for nine years, retiring in 1998.  In his retirement, Ray took the sexton’s position at Saint Mary’s Church in East Walpole, always ensuring the church was in perfect condition.  He continued his duties with Saint Mary’s up until January of this year.

 

Ray had a deep connection to his Catholic Faith.  In addition to caring for his beloved church, he was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus.  At the Walpole Council 1319, Ray was recognized as a Third-Degree Member and in the Bishop Minihan Assembly, he was recognized as a Fourth-Degree Member.  In addition to celebrating his own faith, Ray graciously accepted his wife Frieda’s heritage as a member of the German American Club in Walpole.  Together, Ray and Frieda spent countless hours at the various functions, always sharing a dance.

 

When Ray wasn’t hard at work or volunteering his time, he loved being in his woodshop at home, creating various pieces for anyone who asked.  In addition to his skills as a master woodworker, he was very talented in creating stained glass pieces.  Away from his home, Ray was content on the ocean with his friends, competing to land the biggest fish of the day.

Loving father of Ingrid Lane of Florida.

Brother of Robert Lane of Westwood and Jane Johnson of South Yarmouth.

Also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.

 

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Ray’s Life Celebration on Monday, March 9, 2020 from 4 to 7 PM and Tuesday, March 10, 2020 from 9 to 9:30 AM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Mary’s Church, 176 Washington Street, East Walpole on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at 10:00 AM.  Interment will follow in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Council 1319 Building Association, Knights of Columbus, 137 Stone Street, Walpole, MA 02081.
