Patrick A. Moriarty

Patrick A. Moriarty, age 86, passed away in the Ellis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Norwood, Massachusetts on Thursday, August 16, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland on July 31, 1932, he was the son of the late Joseph and Annie (O'Sullivan) Moriarty. Patrick was raised at 3 Rock Street in Kenmare and received his education in his hometown. He took his first job with D O'Brien Corkery in Kenmare, working as a laborer. In 1952, Patrick left Ireland for England, where he quickly found work with the McAlpine Company working in the Isle of Grain rebuilding an oil refinery that was destroyed during World War II. A year later, he settled in Swindon, England, continuing his work as a laborer with the McAlpine Company, alongside his brother Joe who joined him in 1953.

Back before leaving for England, Patrick met his wife to be, Joan B. O'Sullivan, of Ballyhar, Killarney, Co. Kerry and together they enjoyed a few dates. When Patrick left for England, Joan immigrated to the United States of America, and the two held a long-distance romance through letters sent back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1956, Patrick and Joan returned to Ireland for a holiday and became engaged. Joan returned to Boston to place Patrick's paperwork in order for his immigration in 1957. Upon landing in the U.S., Patrick worked with Anchor Fence, with his brother Joe again, before joining the Laborer's International Union of North America and finding work with the Charles Logue Building Company with whom he worked for more than 20 years. Patrick married his beloved Joan on May 21, 1960. They were proud to welcome their son Joseph in December of 1961 and their beloved daughter Theresa in August of 1964. Patrick was proud to eventually settle his family in the small town of Walpole, Massachusetts in 1972. Patrick retired from the John Mutch Company, Inc in 1995 but he maintained his memberships in Local 223 and later Local 138 of the Laborer's Union for over 60 years.

Throughout his life, Patrick's Irish roots remained very important to him. As a young man, at his confirmation, Patrick took the solemn oath of a Pioneer, which he remained dedicated to all of his life. After immigrating to the U.S., he stayed close to friends of Irish heritage, and spent countless nights with them dancing in the old Dudley Street Dance Halls in Roxbury and later at Concannon's Village in Norwood. Patrick was also a longtime member of Norwood Irish Music Club and the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton.

Patrick loved living an active life, when he wasn't hard at work, he could be found around his home taking care of various projects and ensuring his yard was well maintained. He was the first one to lend a hand when anyone asked for help with their own projects and lovingly helped his son and daughter around their own homes. Even when he was enjoying some rare quiet time, he kept himself busy watching the local birds and researching them in his well-used bird watching book. However more than anything, Patrick was a dedicated family man, who treasured the time spent with those he loved. He was a devoted husband to Joan and the two enjoyed a special bond that was often celebrated with evening dances and many trips back to Ireland together. Patrick loved taking an active role in Joseph and Theresa's lives, always providing whatever help they needed. He was overjoyed at the births of all of his grandchildren and was always so proud of them and all of their accomplishments. He greatly enjoyed one last trip home to Kenmare in May of 2017 where he got to visit with family and friends.

Brother of Mary Ward and her husband Dennis of Somerville, Joseph A. Moriarty and his late wife Elizabeth of West Roxbury, John Moriarty and his wife Margaret of Kenmare, Ireland, Anna Lynch and her late husband Michael of Kenmare, Ireland, the late Michael Moriarty, and the late Daniel Moriarty both of Kenmare.
Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended members of the O'Sullivan and Moriarty families both here in the U.S. and in Ireland and England.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Patrick's Life Celebration on Sunday, August 19, 2018 from 2 to 6 PM and Monday, August 20, 2018 from 9 to 9:30 AM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Mary's Church, 176 Washington Street, East Walpole on Monday, August 20, 2018 at 10:00 AM.
