Michel George Méthot, age 81, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2025, at the Lifecare Center of Attleboro, Massachusetts. Born and raised in Fall River, Massachusetts on July 17, 1943, he was the son of the late Lucien and Vivian M. (Grenier) Méthot.
Michel, also known as Mike, graduated from the Monsignor Prevost High School in Fall River with the class of 1961. He continued his education at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire where he majored in French. Mike's first language was French, and his love for the language was a natural influence on his choice of major in college. After receiving his Bachelor's degree in 1965, Mike took a position at Somerset High School in Somerset, Massachusetts, teaching French to future fellow Francophiles.
Mike returned to his education two years later, enrolling at the Theological College at Catholic University in Washington, DC. Raised in the Catholic religion, Mike was deeply committed to his faith and God. He would also study at Yale Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut. Mike would work in New Bedford, Massachusetts and Swansea, Massachusetts, before taking a teaching position at Franklin High School in the late 1970's.
Later, Mike would begin dating Louise Dumont, a fellow language teacher and French speaker. The pair had met many years before through a mutual friend and colleague. Friendship turned to romance, and on June 19th, 1982, Mike married the love of his life, Louise Beatrice Dumont, in Amherst, Massachusetts. The young couple made their married home in Sharon, Massachusetts, before purchasing their forever home in Plainville, Massachusetts in 1985.
Mike grew in his role at Franklin High School over the course of his career there. He taught French, Spanish, and Latin courses. Later, Mike would take over as the Director of Foreign Languages and Chairman for Franklin K-12. An advocate for his students, Mike was involved in the Massachusetts Teachers Association, serving on multiple committees, as well as the National Teachers Association, and the American Association of Teachers of French. He was also a member of Massachusetts Foreign Language Association (MAFLA) and served on their board. He loved to introduce his students to the world, fostering a love of other cultures through exchange programs in France and Spain, until his retirement in the early 2000's. During the course of his career, Mike won multiple NDEA awards to study abroad in Europe, as well as in Senegal, Africa. Mike also served on an accreditation committee that enabled him to visit schools across Massachusetts as well as one time in China.
In his free time, Mike loved spending time with his wife Louise. They shared a passion for language and traveled to France and other European countries together. At home they enjoyed cooking meals together, sampling wines, and trying new restaurants. And, oh, how he could dance! Often taking every opportunity to do so with his wife in his arms. He also liked to relax in his garden, which he shared with a family of woodchucks that regularly devoured his plants. Mike remained steadfast in his faith his entire life and was a long-time communicant of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Sharon. He was incredibly involved with his Church, giving back to his religious community, and living the values of his faith. Mike especially loved Easter and was an active participant of the Easter Triduum.
