Maureen C. (Manton) McKenna, age 78, passed away peacefully in her Walpole, Massachusetts home, after a brave battle with cancer, on April 2, 2016, surrounded by her loving son and daughter. Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts on March 25, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (O'Brien) Manton, the 5th child of 8. Her family eventually settled in Roslindale, where she graduated from Roslindale High School with the Class of 1956. After graduation, Maureen modeled for Jordan Marsh while working at the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston.
Maureen married Paul T. McKenna on July 25, 1959 and as their family began to grow, welcoming their sons, Joshua in 1961 and Steven in 1963, Maureen and Paul settled in Walpole, Massachusetts to raise their young family. After living in Walpole for about three years, Maureen welcomed her daughter Allison in 1969.
She was a member of the Savin Hill Yacht Club in Dorchester for many years, where she enjoyed spending time aboard her family boat "Summer Place" traveling all over New England. Maureen's love for travel continued, creating wonderful memories on her trips to England, Ireland, and the Azores with dear friends, Henry and Fiona Davis. However her fondest memories of traveling were the trips she took to Paris and Iceland with her son Joshua and her granddaughter Lauren.
Finding herself as a single mom of 3, Maureen began taking classes at Dean College in Franklin and earned a position with Lumber Mutual Insurance Company in 1984. After working her way up through the company, she retired in 2001. After her retirement, Maureen's loving nature guided her in caring for the elderly.
In 1997, Maureen was named Walpole's Citizen of the Year, recognizing her accomplishment for single handedly raising the funds to purchase the Walpole Fire Department's first thermal imaging camera.
She was incredibly proud of her Irish heritage and was devoted to her friends and faith. As an avid New England Patriots Fan, she was constantly cheering them on. In addition, she loved animals and enjoyed visiting Castle Island.
Most of all, Maureen was devoted to her family. She was the common thread that always kept her family together, arranging luncheons for her siblings or the annual family reunion with the 80+ members. She always had a smile for everyone and when she spoke, she made you feel like you were the only one in the room.
