Mary Catherine Meers

May 15, 1929 — August 9, 2016

Mary Catherine (Geoffrion) Meers, age 87, passed away peacefully in her Foxborough, Massachusetts home on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. Born in West Springfield, Massachusetts on May 15, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Valmore Francis and Katherine Teresa (O'Connor) Geoffrion. As a young girl, Mary moved with her family to the Allston area of Boston, where she attended Saint Anthony's Elementary School. She went on to graduate from Saint Mary's High School in Brookline. Mary met her long time husband Robert Joseph Meers at a dance in 1947. They married two years later on November 26, 1949 in Saint Columbkille's Church in Brighton and spent their honeymoon at Niagara Falls.

As a young married couple, Mary and Bob lived in an apartment in Cleveland Circle and later in Oak Square before purchasing their home on Parsons Street in Brighton, where they raised their family. She was a devoted mother to her nine children and always made sure they were well cared for. Mary was the original "DIY'er," long before HGTV, and took on any craft or project that came her way. With such a large family, she often made clothes for her children, took on house projects like painting, paneling, wallpapering, screen and window repairs and somehow still found time to bake her famous chocolate chip cookies for everyone to enjoy. Not every project was done out of necessity, as Mary enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cross stitching, embroidering, painting and making jewelry.

Although she stayed busy at home, she always found a way to support her children in their various activities. She served as a Den Mother, CCD teacher and PTA volunteer.
In addition to life at home, Mary took to the working world as well. She was a clerk with John Hancock Co. and later moved to the James Garfield School. She served as the librarian for several years before becoming the Executive Assistant to the Principal.

In 1997, after spending 40 years on Parsons Street, Mary and Bob moved to Norwood, Massachusetts, before settling in Sharon in 2004, where they enjoyed many years close to children and grandchildren. She quickly settled into her new hometown, becoming a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Church. She also joined the Sharon Knitting Club, where she was blessed to meet such wonderful women who became her friends.

Above all, family was most important to Mary, she was a devoted wife who loved her husband of 65 years dearly. Together, Mary and Bob shared a long life together with their children and grandchildren. She shared her love in a quiet way, usually through one of her many talents. Whether making her famous chocolate chip cookies, holiday dresses for her girls, Halloween costumes, or their favorite birthday cake or holiday dessert, she always found a way to make each one of her children feel special. Mary loved making quilts for her children and as their families grew with the addition of grandchildren, she knitted baby blankets and sweaters for all.

She shared many of her interests and talents with her children, and later in life with her grandchildren. Mary's grandchildren brought so much joy to her life and she loved showing them how to knit, sew and bake. She also passed along her love for stamp collecting and bird watching. Mary loved supporting her grandchildren in their various activities, just as she did with her own children. She and Bob regularly attended sporting events, dance recitals, school plays and grandparents days.

Most recently, Mary moved to Cannon Forge Drive in Foxborough, and while she didn't have the opportunity to spend as much time as we would have liked, she was so happy to be "home," looking out the window at the many birds outside and enjoying her new surroundings.
