Mary "Eleanor" McDavitt (Pothier) age 92 passed away in Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Massachusetts on Saturday, August 13, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Plymouth, Nova Scotia on October 6, 1923, she was the daughter of Simon and Alma (Boudreau) Pothier. As a young girl Eleanor attended a one room school house for her education. She then went on to Digby Business School in St. John Nova Scotia and in turn moved to the U.S. at the age of 23 and stayed with her Aunt Laura DeVeau with aspirations to begin her career. She met the love of her life, Lawrence W. McDavitt, through family and friends within a few years of her arrival. They married in 1950 and began a family soon after. They settled in Walpole and raised 6 wonderful children.
Family was incredibly important to Eleanor. She loved all the family celebrations to include Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter gatherings at her home in Walpole. On Christmas day she always made her traditional Acadian dish, Rappieur Pie, and set in motion a family tradition that continues to this day. Her family in Nova Scotia was also very special to her, and she traveled back to Canada once a year to visit her family that was still in the area.
She was an excellent seamstress and made her children's clothes when they were young. She also loved to crochet and knit, and over the years she has gifted her homemade crafts to so many family and friends to include afghans, slippers, potholders, and baby sweater sets. When she heard there was a need she made it her mission to help the various cancer centers by making and donating chemo caps for the Boston Area hospitals.
Eleanor went back to work full time when her children were in school and was employed by Allied Auto Parts, and then in later years by Curtis Steel. Once retired, Eleanor and Lawrence purchased a mobile home and spent each summer in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia with Eleanor's family. During this same time they were also part of the "99ers" group and they gathered weekly to enjoy card games and each other's company. The 99ers took many trips together to include Florida, Las Vegas, and Jamaica and have wonderful memories of these trips.
In later years, Eleanor volunteered at the Senior Center for the Walpole Council on Aging, and also volunteered at the Polls for each election.
Throughout her life Eleanor was a devout Catholic and attended church regularly. Her faith was very important to her.
