Mary G. Johnson

Mary G. (O'Brien) Johnson, age 85, passed away peacefully in her Walpole, Massachusetts home on Thursday, August 27, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. Born in the Mission Hill section of Boston, Massachusetts on July 10, 1930, she was the daughter of the late William and Gertrude (Connelly) O'Brien. She graduated from Mission High School with the class of 1947, where during her senior year, she was named the 1st Miss Mission.

Mary married her husband, Leonard C. Johnson, on September 15, 1951 in Mission Church. She moved to England to be with her husband, as he was still on active duty. Once they returned to the United States, Mary and Leonard settled back in their hometown of Mission Hill. They moved to Hyde Park 4 years later and in the mid 1960's as her children grew older, Mary took a position with the City of Boston as a Crossing Guard. After moving to West Roxbury, she found a position with the City of Boston's Traffic and Parking Department as a parking clerk. She retired in 1992 with 25 years of dedicated service to the City of Boston.

Mary has a love for music, which led to her love of dancing and a wonderful social life. She enjoyed attending the monthly functions and dances at the American Legion in Dorchester with friends as well as spending a few weekends every year in Eastover, Massachusetts.

In 1994, Mary and Leonard moved to Walpole, Massachusetts and enjoyed spending the Winter months in Naples, Florida. She enjoyed playing bocce, golfing, playing cards, and spending time at the beach. Most important to Mary was her family. She along with her husband, began their summer tradition of summering in Green Harbor, which lasted for over 55 years. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she cherished the time spent around her table for Sunday dinner.

Loving mother of Leonard C. Johnson, II and his wife Mary of Easton, Deborah Hartnett and her husband Michael of Franklin, Karen Sweeney and her husband John of Walpole, Mary Ellen Belmonte and her husband James of Walpole, and Robert Johnson and his wife Clary of Mansfield.
Cherished grandmother of Lenny, Christine, Kim, Michael, Brian, Lauren, John, Timmy, Meaghan, Anthony, Sean, Robert, Christopher, Clarisa, and the late Molly and great grandmother of Abigail, Leonard Colin, Liam, Thomas, Henry, Bennett, Theodore, and Hannah.
Sister of William O'Brien of Naples, FL, the late Rita Wiseman, and the late Virginia Mirabito.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Mary's Life Celebration on Sunday, August 30, 2015 from 3-7PM and Monday, August 31, 2015 from 9-9:30AM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Timothy's Church, 650 Nichols Street, Norwood on Monday, August 31, 2015 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Mount Benedict Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Alzheimer's Association, 480 Pleasant St, Watertown, MA 02472.
