Mary Ann (Long) Allen, age 88, passed away peacefully in the Harrington House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Walpole on Saturday, January 21, 2017, with her family at her side. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 12, 1928, she was the daughter of the late James F. and Ella (Cunningham) Long. She was raised in Roslindale and attended Roslindale High School. Before graduating with the Class of 1946, Mary met the love of her life, John Leo Allen. After graduation, she took a position with New England Telephone.
Mary and John were married on August 23, 1952 in Holy Name Church in West Roxbury. Two years later they settled in Walpole on Spring Street, where Mary took on the role of a homemaker, raising and caring for her young family. Mary looked forward to vacations at her parents' home in Hampton Beach, where she was able to introduce her children to their extended family. In August of 1969, Mary and John moved to Homeward Lane and enjoyed vacationing on Cape Cod. They went on to purchase a vacation home in Myrtle Beach, which they enjoyed for 10 years together.
Mary spent countless hours volunteering for the HESSCO Meals on Wheels Program for over 25 years. She enjoyed vacationing with her close friends, visiting White Creek, New York, Virginia, and taking a river cruise through Europe. Most of all she was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She and John were best friends, married for almost 60 years. Mary loved being with her family, always with her dogs, Sandy and Dandy, by her side, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Loving mother and Nana to Helen and her husband Richard Ollis of Walpole (Rachel, Richie, Ryan, Russell); Diane Allen and her husband John Remmert of Pelham, NY (Jocelyn, Jack); Jack and his wife Joanne Allen of Attleboro, (Maryssa, Amanda); and Ginny and her husband Chris Crehan of Franklin, (Eileen, April). Sister of the late Helen Ann Kelliher and the late James Long. Beloved aunt of Judy and her husband Mark Fenton and the late Dan Connolly. Sister-in-law of George Allen.
