Marjorie Florence Buttimer

Marjorie Florence (Simpson) Buttimer, age 96, passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at Serenity Hill Nursing Home in Wrentham, Massachusetts. Born in Norwood, Massachusetts on August 22, 1928, she was the daughter of George and Florence Simpson. Marjorie was raised in Walpole, Massachusetts, a place she would lovingly call home all of her life.

After her graduation from Walpole High School with the class of 1947, Marjorie joined the workforce as a clerk at Jones Pharmacy. Outside of work Marjorie was very active in her church, Epiphany Episcopal. She became a member of the church's Altar Guild while in High School, ensuring that everything necessary was prepared for services, that vestments were set out, and flowers adorned the altar. Marjorie also volunteered with and attended the church's Village Fair. It was at the Village Fair one year that she met the love of her life, John Buttimer, while on a Ferris wheel ride.

Marjorie and John were married on June 24, 1951, at Epiphany Episcopal Church in Walpole. The young couple made their home at Sunny Rock Farm, commonly known as Buttimer's farm, which John ran with his brother. Marjorie transitioned into the role of home maker and mother, welcoming five children over the coming years. Life was busy with five kids and a farm, but the family still found time to adventure, taking day trips together and even venturing out to the World's Fair in New York as well as the Big E in Springfield, Massachusetts. During this time Marjorie remained active at Epiphany, singing with the choir, teaching Sunday school, serving as part of the Altar Guild, and of course volunteering with the Village Fair. Marjorie would also assist John, who affectionately called her his "chicken", with the farm as needed, whether it was running errands, doing paperwork, coordinating hayrides in the fall, or anything else needed to help keep the business running.

In the late 1960's, with her children grown, Marjorie returned to the workforce. She worked as a clerk at Schrieter's Market before joining the food service team at Norwood Hospital in 1968. In addition to her job at Norwood Hospital, Marjorie began helping out at the Sunny Rock Farm Stand which opened in 1971. Many residents of Walpole and surrounding towns will lovingly recall Marjorie and her delicious, freshly baked cookies. She lovingly ran the stand for decades, with many members of the family working to ensure its success, often with multiple generations baking in shifts during the holiday season.

Marjorie retired from Norwood Hospital after 25 years of service in 1993, ready to take a little time for herself. She and John enjoyed the extra time together, traveling the world. They visited Hawaii, Ireland, England, and all across the United States. Together they enjoyed taking cruises, collecting models of the various cruise ships they traveled on. After John's passing in 1997, Marjorie continued to travel, making a memorable trip down the Rhine River in Germany with one of her grandchildren.

In her free time, Marjorie enjoyed cruising for yard sales, finding knickknacks and hidden gems. She enjoyed keeping active by swimming at The Club in Walpole at the Foundry. Marjorie would pass the time knitting afghans, gifting many cherished family heirlooms to her children and grandchildren. To relax, Marjorie loved to do crossword puzzles and get creative with adult coloring books. Her favorite thing to do in her free time though, was spend time with her family, creating and sharing many wonderful memories together.
