Marie G. Bergamo, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at the Alliance Health at Maples Nursing Home in Wrentham, Massachusetts. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 5, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Giovanni and Florinda (Caruso) Polvere. Marie was raised in the Roslindale neighborhood of Boston, where she graduated from Hyde Park High School with the Class of 1949. Following her graduation, Marie took a position with the John Hancock Insurance Company in Boston, working as an administrative assistant.
Marie married her beloved husband, Philip D. Bergamo, on September 9, 1956, at Sacred Heart Church in Roslindale. Together they made their home in the Wollaston neighborhood of Quincy, Massachusetts. In their new home, Marie took on the role of a homemaker, raising and caring for her young family. In 1960, Marie and Phil made their home in Walpole, Massachusetts, where they raised their four children. After her youngest children were enrolled in school, Marie returned to her career, taking an administrative position at the Stone School in Walpole. She later transferred to the West Junior High School before moving up to Walpole High School, working in the office as the secretary to the Principal. After leaving the high school, Marie remained with the Walpole School Department, settling into the Superintendent's Office until her retirement in 1996. While she was officially retired, Marie was often asked to return to her position at the Superintendent's Office to help out in a time of need. Her civic duties did not end in the school department, as Marie regularly volunteered to work in the polls during town, state, and federal elections. Following her retirement, Marie made her home in Foxborough, to be closer to her beloved New England Patriots, and more recently, she made her home in Plymouth, to be closer to her family.
Marie was an avid traveler, whether enjoying local trips or visiting destinations far away. While her son, Phil, was stationed in Germany, Marie ventured to Europe, taking in many of the sights and spending time together before Phil’s deployment to the Middle East. She returned to Europe once more with her grandson, Jeremy, showing him the sights of Italy and Paris. Back stateside, Marie looked forward to various trips with her friends at the Walpole and Foxborough Senior Centers, boarding the bus for a day on the road. While she lived a very social life, Marie enjoyed some quiet time too, knitting items to donate to families in need through her church, working on crossword puzzles, or picking up a recommended book.
Throughout her life, Marie was devoted to her family and loved taking in active role in her childrens lives. She was a founding member and avid supporter of the Walpole High School Football Booster's Club, supporting her sons and their team through various fund-raising efforts. Marie opened her home on many occasions to the Rebels Football Team, hosting spaghetti dinners, with her famous sauce and meatballs, to ensure everyone was ready to take the field. As a strong supporter of her boys, Marie ensured to attend every game, cheering for her sons from the stands. Her daughters held a special place in Marie's heart, passing on her recipes to them and sewing wedding dresses for their big days. Upon welcoming her grandchildren, Marie was thrilled to earn the title of Nana. She was quick with her knitting needles to ensure each grandchild had a warm sweater and afghan to wrap up in, always made with love. Everyone in her family was blessed to receive a quilt from Marie, handmade with special touches to reflect individual personalities. Marie's presents were second to her presence in the lives of those she loved so much. She found so much joy in surrounding herself with her family for holiday gatherings or special occasions.
