Margaret "Peggy" Hunter

Margaret (Peggy) Hunter, died on November 19, 2018. She was a lifelong resident of East Walpole, born August 3, 1933 to Anne Steven Hunter and Samuel A. Hunter. She was graduated from Walpole High School with the class of 1950.  After graduating from the Katharine Gibbs School, she was hired by a fledgling airline called BOAC in 1954. The airline went on to become British Airways and Ms. Hunter worked for them for forty-seven years.  In 2001, she retired as Director of Group Sales in order to focus on her charitable work. The charitable causes she was devoted to included working with her local church, with the Trustees of Reservations, and with a number of animal welfare organizations, including the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Fall River Animal Shelter.  She was an active member of the British Charitable Society. She had also recently received news of her election to membership in the Scottish Charitable Society, the first woman to be so elected.

When Ms. Hunter was five she was enrolled in a local dance school and learned both tap and ballet. Her parents eventually convinced her to study Scottish Highland dancing and in 1947 she won the junior championship of the Eastern United States in Scottish Highland dancing. Over the next few years she went on to win a number of additional championships in both the junior and senior divisions. After her years of successful competition, she eventually gave up Scottish Highland dancing, but she never gave up ballet, and was still taking classes as recently as this summer.  

She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Herbert Hunter of Glasgow, Scotland, and Robert Hunter of Walpole. She is survived by her nieces, Susan E. Hunter, of Portland, Maine and Joan R. Hunter of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and her nephew, Herbert Hunter, of Fairhaven, and several great nieces and great nephews, all of.whom she loved dearly.

Her funeral will be Wednesday, November 28 at 11 a.m. at Union Congregational Church, 55 Rhodes Ave, East Walpole, with burial to follow.  In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s Pet Care Assistance Fund. The family wishes to thank the caregivers from Right at Home and Steward Hospice Care, and all her friends and neighbors for their kindness and devotion at the end of Margaret’s life.  Arrangements by James H.
