Leo J. Mahoney, age 66, passed away in the Norwood Hospital in Norwood, Massachusetts on Sunday, May 15, 2016. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 5, 1950, he was the son of the late Leo J. and Mary (Cahill) Mahoney. He was raised in Mashpee and graduated from Lawrence High School in Falmouth with the Class of 1968. While in high school, Leo developed his passion for golf, he was a member of the high school golf team and spent weekends and summers as a caddy at the Falmouth Country Club. He continued his education at Cape Cod Community College, before attending the University of Nevada at Reno. While at Reno, Leo joined the ATO Fraternity and he was known as "Lobsta". He went on to graduate from the University of Nevada in 1972 and took a buyer position with Jordan Marsh Department Store.
Leo only spent a short time with Jordan Marsh, moving to Maryland to take a sales position with the Bigelow Sanford Carpet Company. In the late 1970's he was transferred to their Boston location and settled in Norfolk, Massachusetts. Leo met Meg, who was working a summer job at Bigelow in 1980. He promised to take her out for steak under the stars, which turned out to be tube steaks under the summer sky, which was just a perfect way to start their lives together. Their relationship quickly blossomed and they were married on July 7, 1985, making their home together in Millis. They spent a short while in the late 1980's in Vernon, Connecticut before returning to Massachusetts in 1989, settling in Medfield. After almost a decade in Medfield, Leo and Meg moved to their home in Norfolk in 1998, where they have lived ever since. After settling in Norfolk, Leo took a position with J.F. MacDonald Flooring and later began working with Mousseau Floors. After a long career in the flooring industry, Leo was looking forward to retirement in the coming years.
Leo's work, however, did not define him. He had so many passions in his life and was always so much fun to be around. He loved laughing and making others laugh alongside him, usually with a sarcastic remark or two. Leo had a passion for sports, he loved following the Boston sports teams, especially the New England Patriots, as well as following college football and March Madness. At any given time, Leo could pull out the stats of a certain team or player, no matter how big or small. He passed his love of sports on to many children, who he spent countless hours teaching to enjoy various games. Throughout his life, Leo enjoyed a good game of golf and would often return to Cape Cod to play a round with his father. He also enjoyed playing cards including poker and gin, he made sure that before his girls left for college they were well versed in these games. His card games translated into playing Left, Right, Center with a group of close friends, who always enjoyed a game night spent with Leo. While staying busy all the time, he did enjoy a relaxing night, where Leo could be found at home with a cigar in one hand and a glass of Jameson in the other.
Leo's family meant the world to him, he attended every sporting event that his daughter's took part in and was present for all of their ballet recitals. As a man who was right at home in the water, he would frequently take his family to Old Silver Beach on Cape Cod, where he would spend hours floating around the ocean. He and Meg loved spending time together at the Eagle Brook Saloon in Norfolk, where Leo would enjoy a "good beer" followed by Bud Light.
