Lawrence "Larry" Rooney

December 30, 1965 — August 3, 2022

Lawrence "Larry" L. Rooney, Jr., age 56, passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at his home in Walpole, Massachusetts, surrounded by his loving family.  Born in Malden, Massachusetts on December 30, 1965, he was the son of Lawrence L. Rooney, Sr. and Phyllis A. (Pasche) Rooney.  He was raised in Malden, where he quickly found his love for ice hockey and baseball. Larry attended Malden Catholic High School, and graduated from Malden High School, in 1983. He went on to play hockey at University of Massachusetts at Lowell, where he studied History.  Following his college experience, Larry took a position with the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 4, in Boston, working as an elevator technician. Larry loved his job, as he was able to educate many apprentice technicians in his 26 year career before early retirement.

During this time, Larry also worked at MVP, where he met his dear friend, Stacey.  After being good friends for many years, Stacey decided that Larry had to meet her new friend, Julie Gavin, thus beginning a beautiful love story.  As avid Boston sports fans, it was only fitting for Larry to take Julie to a Red Sox game for their first date.  As their relationship continued, Larry realized that Julie was the one, he proposed, and the two were married on May 20, 2006, at Saint Timothy's Church in Norwood.  After spending a short time living in Beverly and then Norwood, Larry and Julie made their home together in Walpole, where they welcomed two children, Gavin and Maggie.  Larry jumped headfirst into fatherhood and loved every minute.  As his kids grew up, Larry was the first to volunteer as a coach for Gavin's basketball and baseball teams, as well as Maggie's softball and ice hockey teams.  He was also on the board of Walpole Little League. He was so proud of his children's accomplishments and loved being right by their side through them all.  After the athletic seasons were through, Larry packed his family up for their annual Summer trip to Rangely, Maine, showcasing his skills on the jet ski and water skis. He tried to spend every minute he could on the water.  Back at home, Larry enjoyed lounging around the pool with the kids, listening to his favorite music and playing corn hole or kan jam with anyone he could challenge.

Larry's love for sports continued throughout his life, and he continued playing ice hockey well into his 50s for the JW Masonry team in the NESHL.  When he wasn't lacing up his own skates, Larry could be found cheering for his favorite professional team, the Boston Bruins.  While Boston sports began with the Bruins, they certainly didn't end with them.  He was a New England Patriots season ticket holder with a good friend for many years, always enjoyed taking in a game at Fenway Park and wore his lucky green sweatshirt at the Garden watching the Celtics.  In more recent years, Larry looked forward to days spent on the golf course with his favorite foursome…himself, Julie, Gavin, and Maggie.

Beloved husband of Julie A. (Gavin) Rooney.

Loving father of Gavin J. Rooney and Margaret "Maggie" E. Rooney both of Walpole.

Devoted son of Lawrence L. Rooney, Sr. of Lynn and the late Phyllis A. (Pasche) Rooney.

Adored son-in-law of Paul M. Gavin and Margaret “Peggy” Gavin of Walpole.

Cherished brother-in-law of Jennifer L. Nelson and her husband, Jeremy of Franklin and Danielle K. Gavin of Norwood.

Doting uncle of John and Jillian Nelson of Franklin.

Also survived and loved by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
