Kelly-Ann Sheppard, age 48, died in her Walpole, Massachusetts home on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. Born in New York, New York on August 10, 1966, she was raised in Southington, Connecticut and graduated from Southington High School with the class of 1984. While in high school, Kelly played softball and was a member of the Key Club and the National Honor Society. She earned a scholarship from the Bradley Memorial Hospital to attend Syracuse University, where in 1988, she graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Biology.
After graduating from Syracuse, Kelly began her career as a staff research scientist at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She remained there for 2 years before beginning her PhD Program at Tufts Medical School. While working toward her PhD, she married the love of her life, Christopher R. DeSimone, on October 16, 1993. In 1995, she completed her education at Tufts, with her PhD in BioChemisty.
Once she completed her PhD Program, Kelly began working at Wyeth Pharmaceutical in Cambridge as a staff scientist in their research lab. In 2000, her son Joseph was born and in 2003 her twins, Emily and Elizabeth were born. At this time, Kelly left Wyeth and took a job with Novartis Pharmaceutical in Cambridge. She was employed initially as a staff scientist and was later elevated to Investigator, working to develop new pharmaceuticals. She headed up her own project and was in constant contact with many labs around the world assisting her with her research.
Kelly loved reading, traveling to Martha’s Vinyard, and spending time with her book club friends. Most of all, she cherished the time she spent with her family. She loved taking an active role in her children’s lives, regularly volunteering at the Fisher Elementary School. In addition she enjoyed watching her son, Joe play baseball and hockey, and serving as a Girl Scout Leader and a Soccer Coach for her daughters, Emily and Elizabeth.
