Kathleen Smith

Kathleen (McCarthy) Smith, age 85, passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at her home in Walpole, Massachusetts, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Skibbereen, Co Cork, Ireland on March 4, 1938, she was the daughter of the late John "Jack" and Mary (Minihane) McCarthy. Kathy was raised and educated in Ireland before traveling across the Atlantic Ocean in 1958 to spend some time with relatives in the United States.

A couple of years later, in 1960, Kathy returned to Ireland, and during a trip to London, England, she met her husband to be, William Smith. The couple traveled to the US together, making their home in Columbus, Ohio, where Kathy took on the role of a homemaker, raising and caring for her four daughters. In 1978, Kathy moved south, settling in Englewood, Florida, where she began her career in the restaurant business, working as a waitress. After moving north, Kathy helped a friend with a restaurant venture in Rhode Island.

In more recent years, Kathy enjoyed traveling, spending time with each of her daughters and their families. Kathy was delighted to welcome her grandchildren and to take an active role in caring for them. As her grandchildren grew up and began attending school, Kathy was always the first to greet them upon arriving home, with one of her favorite baked goods in hand. In 2012, Kathy settled in Walpole, Massachusetts, but never lost her love for her true home, Ireland. She enjoyed countless trips back to her home country over the years, taking trips around the counties to visit relatives and friends. No matter where she was, Ireland, England, or the United States, Kathy was most happy when she was surrounded by those she loved and a flower or two.

Loving mother of Mary L. Conroy and her husband, Thomas, of Walpole, Susan S. Pickert and her husband, Todd, of Kirkwood, Missouri, Sandra G. Smyth and her husband, Patrick, of Lakeland, Florida, and Colleen E. Steineman and her husband, John, of Rotunda, Florida.

Cherished grandmother of Blake Conroy, Thomas and Matthew Pickert, Elizabeth, Colin, and Nicholas Smyth, Peter Williams, and Katie Garrett; and great grandmother of Hunter Williams.

Sister of Patsy Molloy of Gort, Co. Galway, Ireland, the late Mary Deady, and the late Thomas McCarthy.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Kathy's Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated in Blessed Sacrament Church, 10 Diamond Street, Walpole on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at 10:30 AM.  Interment will follow in Saint Francis Cemetery in Walpole. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
