Joseph G. Neary, 79, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2024 surrounded by his family. Joe was born October 28, 1944 to John and Nancy (Hourihan) Neary of Brookline. He was the devoted husband of the late Susan Russell Neary and loving father to Michael Neary and his partner Debbie Lee of Brookline and Kathryn Neary and her wife Jacquelyn of Weymouth.
Joe graduated from Catholic Memorial High school in 1962. He went on to complete his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Boston State College. He later earned his RN at Laboure College in Milton.
At 21, Joe began his career teaching English at Boston Latin School where he met his wife Susan. He taught at Boston Latin for 25 years before becoming a school nurse. He worked in the Boston Public School system for 53 years, always making sure to mark the occasion at the start of the school year. In addition to school nursing, Joe also worked part-time as a private duty nurse caring for children for many years. His calm and kind demeanor made him well-suited to nursing. Even after changing careers, Joe retained his knack for grammar and love of short stories.
Joe always kept busy. He loved taking walks, reading, keeping up with local real estate, time in the sun, and he took great pride in maintaining his home and garden. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generosity, sense of humor, and many catchphrases. Joe was a special person who made a positive impact on all who knew him.
In addition to his children, Joe is survived by his siblings Ruth Browne, Nancy Lane and her husband Harry, Mary Ann Neary, and his sister-in-law Mary Mantone. He is predeceased by his brother Jack Neary and his sister Ellen Holmes. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
