Joseph W. McCarthy Jr., age 72, died suddenly at Norwood Hospital, on Friday, November 16, 2012. Joe was the son of the late Joseph W. McCarthy and the late Gertrude H. McCarthy (Dacey). Joe was born and raised in Charlestown Massachusetts, lived in Roslindale from many years and has been a resident of Walpole since 1991. He graduated from Boston Technical High School in 1958 were he was a member of the varsity hockey team for all four years. He served two years in the U.S. Army. Joe was a land surveyor of over 50 years. He worked for Henry F. Bryant and sons for ten years, for Whitman & Howard Inc. for 22 years. He then worked independently up until the day before his passing. He could talk about points and bounds for hours on end. He loved his work and everything about the land.
Joe loved to be outdoors. He loved to fish in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He loved to work in the garden and tend to the flowers. Joe loved to play golf especially on Wednesdays in Survey Golf League.
Joe spent many years at the Knights of Columbus, council 62 in Charlestown and he was a member of the Old Charlestown School Boys Association.
Joseph was survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Barbara A. McCarthy (Lynch). Joe was a devoted father to his two daughters, Christine McCarthy of Walpole and Patricia Prior and her husband William Prior of Mansfield. He was a loving "Pa" to Kevin and Jennifer Prior of Mansfield. Joe leaves two cherished brothers, Charles P. McCarthy and his wife Dorothy of Canton and Paul F. McCarthy and his late wife Claire of Taunton. He was also brother also to the late Helen M. Sullivan (McCarthy) of Charlestown. Joe also leaves his special in-laws Ann and Joe French of Norwood along many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws and very close friends.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated at Saint St. Jude Catholic Church, 86 Main St, Norfolk MA on Tuesday November 20, 2012 at 10:00am. Visiting hours are Monday, November 19, 2012 from 4-8PM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home 48 Common Street Walpole. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery.
