John Roland Peterson of Walpole, MA died peacefully in his sleep on January 12th at the age of 75. John was born and raised in Jamaica Plain, where his many lifelong friendships began. He proudly served as a Sergeant in the US Air Force from 1964-1968, his last two years stationed in Japan. He spent his career in banking, with Beneficial and Randolph Savings Bank, leading his colleagues in fundraising efforts for the United Way and inspiring fun in the office with the lottery pool. He retired in 2011.
John is survived by his unparalleled wife and caregiver Frannie (Kraemer) Peterson and his children Kim Lehner and her husband Chris of Dedham, Kerri Connors her husband Steve and children Liam and Cecilia of Hopkinton, and Kristen Wesche, her husband Ryan and children Kiera and Emory of Windsor Locks, CT. He is predeceased by his father Roland, his mother Catherine Rose (McLaughlin) and his sister Carol Martin. He is also survived by his uncle, brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and many dear friends who have become our family.
John was a kind and generous friend to many and enjoyed fishing, playing cards, seeing movies with friends, watching westerns and choosing his weekly football picks. He spent many years coaching his daughters’ basketball and softball teams, many seasons ending in a championship. Many will remember the backyard barbeques and parties in the basement where he loved hosting from behind the bar. John and Frannie delighted in traveling and cruises with their best friends. He often initiated and planned these trips and still talked about their adventures to Yellowstone, Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons National Parks. By far, however, John’s favorite moments were spent with his cherished grandchildren who called him “Papa,” teaching Liam how to fish and spoiling them all with thoughtful gifts.
A private viewing and mass are being held next week. Our family is planning a delayed service when we can gather, hug, share stories, cry, laugh, grieve together and celebrate John’s life. We appreciate all of your outreach, condolences, messages of love, flowers and food. We miss being with all of you during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to John’s charity of choice, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or at https://www.stjude.org/donate.
