John E. Herlihy, ESQ, age 96, passed away in the Cornerstone Assisted Living Center in Canton, Massachusetts on Sunday, December 18, 2016. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts on February 27, 1920, he was the son of the late John and Katherine Herlihy. He was raised in Boston and graduated from English High School with the Class of 1937. John continued his education at Northeastern University, earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering in 1942. After the outbreak of World War II, John was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy and was stationed in the American Theater of Operations as an Ammunition Officer. He married his wife Barbara while on active duty in 1943 and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant in February of 1946.
Upon his return home from the Navy, John pursued a career as a chemical engineer, first at Cabot Corporation in Boston and later at Kendall Mills in Walpole. He and Barbara made their home Dorchester and then settled in Sharon. John decided to return to school and in 1952, earned his Law Degree from Northeastern University. He owned and operated the Law Offices of John E. Herlihy in Walpole for many years.

Loving father of Eileen Buckley and her husband Donald of Franklin, Edward Herlihy and his wife Clara Musto-Herlihy of Canton, and the late Ann Descoteaux and her surviving husband Richard of Newburyport.
Cherished grandfather of 6 and great grandfather of 3.
Brother of the late Rita Scully and her husband Jack and the late Joseph Herlihy and his wife Beverly.
Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend John's visitation on Thursday, December 22, 2016 from 9-10:30 AM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in Blessed Sacrament Church, 10 Diamond Street, Walpole at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place privately in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Old Colony Hospice, 321 Manley Street, West Bridgewater, MA 02379.
