John Daniel “Jack” Dougherty, age 90, passed away peacefully in Wingate at Norton on Thursday, December 5, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. Born in New York City on March 12, 1929, he was the son of the late Daniel John and Agnes (McNeil) Dougherty. He was raised in East Orange, New Jersey and graduated from St. Benedict’s Preparatory School with the Class of 1947. Jack was a standout athlete in high school, playing both varsity basketball and baseball. His skills on the baseball field earned him a full scholarship to Georgetown University, from where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in 1951.
Jack married his beloved wife, Dorothy M. Fischer, on August 19, 1951 in Orange, New Jersey and together they made their home in Middletown, New Jersey. Just a few months later, in October, Jack was inducted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was stationed in Korea with the 364th Infantry Regiment, earning his Combat Infantryman Badge. Jack was honorably discharged in July of 1953, after earning the rank of Corporal.
Upon his return from the Army, Jack began his career at the Prudential Insurance Company, working in the Office Services Division. Following his transfer to Prudential’s Boston, Massachusetts location in the late 1950s, Jack and Dottie settled in Franklin, Massachusetts. Jack’s career with Prudential flourished and he was named Manager of the Office Services Division before his retirement in 1983.
In his retirement, Jack and Dottie left their home in Franklin, making their new home in Dennis on Cape Cod, where Jack loved casting his fishing line into the ocean. As a man who truly admired all the natural beauty in the world, each day Jack would spend hours in his yard, filling the many bird feeders and caring for his gardens. Most of all, Jack was a dedicated family man, who loved spending time surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
