John "Jocko" F. Carey, age 79, passed away in the Norwood Hospital on Monday, March 7, 2016. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 13, 1936, he was the son of the late Patrick and Mary (Diggins) Carey. He was raised in Jamaica Plain and graduated from Boston Trade High School with the Class of 1953. After graduation, John proudly served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Hawaii.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, John returned home to Jamaica Plain and took a position with John Hancock. He married his wife, Agnes McMahon, on June 1, 1963 and after passing the Boston Fire Department's examination became a fire fighter in 1964. His first assignment with the Boston Fire Department was with Ladder 23 in Grove Hall.
As his family began to grow, John enjoyed taking family camping trips and took up the hobbies of hunting and fishing. He moved his young family to Walpole, Massachusetts in 1969, where he became a member of the Knights of Columbus in the mid 1980's, and later obtained the position of 4th Degree Knight.
John was moved to Ladder 28 in Hyde Park in the early 1980's before joining the Arson Squad in the mid 1980's. He was honored with many citations throughout his career and earned the Distinguished Service Award, was twice named fire fighter of the month by the Herald American, and earned 2 Roll of Merits. In addition, he was honored by the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Hyde Park for his bravery. John retired in 1999 after 35 year of dedicated service to the City of Boston.
In his retirement, John picked up the hobby of woodworking and as an avid Boston Sports Fan, never missed a game.
Beloved husband of Agnes (McMahon) Carey.
Loving father of Mark Carey and his wife Kellie of Franklin and Neal Carey and his wife Elizabeth of Norwood.
Cherished grandfather of 2.
Brother of Mary Carey of Plymouth, the late Sheila McLaughlin and Margaret Galvin.
Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
