Joan M. Haynes

November 17, 1936 — November 8, 2018

Joan M. (McKinnon) Haynes, age 81, passed away at Norwood Hospital in Norwood, Massachusetts on Thursday, November 08, 2018. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 17, 1936, she was the daughter of the late William C. and Catherine (Costello) McKinnon. She was raised in Norwood, graduating from Norwood High School with the Class of 1954. Joan then enrolled in secretarial classes and graduated from the Chandler School for Women in Boston. She began her career working as a secretary at the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center.

Joan met her husband to be, Allan W. Haynes, in Hyannis though mutual friends. They were married on September 10, 1960 at Saint Catherine's Church in Norwood and initially made their home together in Norwood. Three years later, in 1963, she and Allan settled in Walpole, Massachusetts, where Joan took on the role of homemaker, raising and caring for her young family. As her children grew up, she returned to her career first as a medical secretary and later in a position with the Archdiocese of Boston. She continued her career as an administrative assistant with the Superintendent of Schools in the Town of Walpole. She retired in 2001 after nearly 10 years of service to her community. In her retirement, Joan continued to work at Newton Wellesley Hospital as a secretary in the volunteer services department.

In addition to caring for her community in the Superintendent's Office, Joan gave back in several ways, including serving as a CCD Teacher at Blessed Sacrament Church, volunteering at the Walpole Food Pantry, and volunteering at Glad Rags in Westwood. As an avid reader, she also was a strong supporter of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library, where she enjoyed countless discussions with her book club.

In her quiet time, Joan loved quilting. Her hobby eventually blossomed into owning her own quilt shop in Marshfield, Massachusetts where she hosted workshops and shared the craft with others.

More than anything, Joan loved being surrounded by her family. She was a devoted wife to her husband, Allan, and was a loving and caring mother to her five children. Joan was overjoyed at the birth of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, treasuring every minute she spent with them. She looked forward to hosting the holidays at her home and started a family tradition, called Second Sunday, where she opened her home to those she loved for a home cooked meal and togetherness.
