Joan M. (Hyland) Geraghty, age 86, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at the Maples Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wrentham, Massachusetts. Born in Brookline, Massachusetts on June 18, 1934, she was the daughter of the late James and Kathryn (Corbett) Hyland. She was raised in Brookline, graduating from Brookline High School with the Class of 1952. Joan continued her education at the Chandler Business School in Boston, earning her secretarial certificate in 1954.
Joan married her beloved husband, Joseph P. Geraghty, on May 10, 1958 in Saint Mary's Church in Brookline. The young couple initially made their home in Norwood, Massachusetts for a year before settling in Walpole in 1959. Five years later, Joan moved her family back to Norwood, where she raised her children. Once her children were all enrolled in school, Joan put her secretarial skills to work, taking a position with the Town of Norwood Board of Appeals starting in 1973. In 1990, Joan transferred to the Town of Walpole Board of Appeals and she and Joe made their home together in Walpole in 1998 for two years before settling in Franklin in 2000. Following her retirement from the Town of Walpole in 2003, Joan and Joe looked forward to escaping the cold and snow of New England, spending their winter months in Naples, Florida.
Throughout her life, Joan enjoyed sports, both watching and participating. As a young woman, she was a regular on the tennis courts and later in life, found her love for golf, belonging to Sharon Country Club and later Foxborough Country Club. As a devoted mother, Joan was always standing by to cheer for her children in all of their athletic events, a tradition that she continued with her grandsons.
