James J. ‘Jim’ Quinn, age 96, passed away in his Walpole, Massachusetts home on June 28, 2021. Born in Buffalo, NY on February 26th, 1925, he was the son of the late James P. and Mary ‘Molly’ (Slattery) Quinn. In his early years, from 1930 until 1936, Jim lived in Manhattan, attending Holy Name Grammar School. He continued his education at New Gardens in Queens and then Woodside, graduating from St. Theresa’s in 1942.
Jim joined the United States Marine Corps at age 17 and served in the Pacific, aboard the USS Essex (CVâ9). During an historic 79-day period, the Essex fought off a total of 357 Japanese raids. He was recalled in 1950 – 1952, leaving the United States Marine Corps with the rank of Captain.
Upon his return home, Jim, a graduate of Fordham University, captained the baseball team. He played in Yankee Stadium as well as on the polo grounds. In 1952, Jim was introduced to Patricia Shields, and they were married in 1954. Together they raised 8 children while living in Roosevelt, NY, Simsbury, CT and later, Walpole, MA.
During this time, Jim was employed by the Standard Register Company until his retirement in 1991. He enjoyed summers and winters in Melvin Village and Lake Winnipesaukee, NH.
Loving husband of the late Patricia M. Quinn, who passed in April of 2018.
Loving father of John T. Shields and his wife JoAnn of Penacook, New Hampshire, Kathleen I. Kennedy and her partner Edward Moore of Franklin, Kevin G. Quinn of Walpole, Terri Hassell and her husband David of Franklin, Maureen Brennan of Allenstown, New Hampshire, Christine Falck of Xenia, Ohio, Patti M. Quinn of Raynham, and Michael J. Quinn of Franklin.
Cherished grandfather of Andrew, Colleen, Kimberly, Sean, James, Kristal, Raymond, William, Patrick, Keenan, Matthew, and Mitchell and great grandfather of Miles, Will, Tucker, Taya, and Peter.
Brother of the late Veronica Walicki.
Uncle of Deidre Russo and Lorna Caridi both of Long Island, New York.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 from 4 to 7 in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Blessed Sacrament Church, 10 Diamond Street, Walpole on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
