J. Philip Mitchell age 80 years died in his daughter's Walpole, Massachusetts home on Wednesday, February 23, 2011. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on April 6, 1930; he was the son of the late Joseph A. & Eileen P. (Cleary) Mitchell. He graduated from Mission High School in Boston with the class of 1948. He went on to graduate from Boston College with the class of 1952, earning his B.A. in Sociology. In 1955, he graduated from Boston State College with his Master's Degree in Education. During the Korean War, Mr. Mitchell served his country in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant. He has been a resident of Pocasset, Massachusetts and Naples, Florida for the past 15 years moving from Walpole, Massachusetts where he spent 34 years. He was the President of Construction Industries of Massachusetts for 19 years and retired in 1994.
Mr. Mitchell served and chaired many committees, he was the Chairman of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association Council of State Executives from 1983-1984, the Chairman (Emeritus) of the Board of New England Society of Association Executives from 1984 - 1985, and served as the President of the New England Highway Users Council for several years.
Mr. Mitchell enjoyed golfing, especially at Quail Run in Naples, boating, and traveling. However, he always especially enjoyed spending time with his family, and they always came first.
Beloved husband of Anne E. (Shea) Mitchell. Loving father of Jay Mitchell and his wife Beth Everett of Brookline, Marleen Mitchell and her husband John Connelly of Walpole, Anne Mitchell of Lexington, Janet Sy and her husband Rick of Walpole, and Frank Mitchell and his wife Monique of Wellesley. Cherished grandfather of 11 and great grandfather of 2. Brother of the late Robert Mitchell, Eleanor Keefe, and Claire Winston.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church East Street (Route 27) at Diamond Street Walpole on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 11:30 AM. Visiting hours are Tuesday, March 1, 2011 from 4-8PM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home 48 Common Street Walpole. Interment is in Saint Joseph's Cemetery in West Roxbury.
