Following his graduation, he enrolled in courses at Bryant College in Providence, earning a bachelor's degree in 1971.
Irving married his beloved wife, Mary Louise Winn, on October 2, 1971. Together the young couple made their home in New Bedford, welcoming two girls, Ann-Marie and Rachel. Over the years, Irving worked various jobs around the New Bedford area, including working alongside his father and managing Sunny Brook Farms. In 1992, Irving began his career with the United States Postal Service, first as a clerk in Providence before taking a position as a mail handler in the New Bedford office. He retired in 2006, after fourteen years of dedicated service.
After the untimely passing of his wife, Mary, Irving stepped back into the world of dating, reaching out to a group that was organizing a singles dinner in Canton. It was during this evening out that he met Barbara A. Mann. In 2008, Irving left his hometown of New Bedford, settling in Norwood to be with his beloved Barbara.
