Herbert Warren Slack, age 71, passed away peacefully in his Walpole, Massachusetts home on Saturday, June 3, 2017, with his loving wife by his side. Born in Washington, DC on November 7, 1945, he was the son of the late Peter L. and Bertina D. (Lewis) Slack. He was raised in East Walpole, Massachusetts and attended Walpole High School, before attending the Norfolk County Agricultural High School.
After high school, Herb enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country during the Vietnam War. During his time in the Army, Herb worked as a tracked vehicle mechanic and earned his sharpshooter qualifications. While on active duty he married Karen Hagbloom and while he was stationed in Germany, they welcomed their son, Steve. He was honorably discharged in October of 1965, after earning the rank of Private First Class. Upon his return home, he and Karen settled in Norfolk and Herb began working at Bird Machine as a welder. Shortly after returning home, Herb welcomed his daughter, Stacy, and he returned to his hometown of Walpole.
Herb continued working at Bird Machine and after realizing that he was the best welder they ever had, he was elevated to the position of supervisor. After his retirement in the late 1980s, he began working for David Lehto at the Lehto Company. On November 2, 1990, he married Dave's daughter, Lisa Ann Lehto, and the couple made their home together on Main Street in Walpole. Herb spent a short time with PJ Hayes in Walpole before finding his wonderful retirement job at Hub Grinding.
Throughout his life, Herb had a passion for motorcycles. He loved taking his yearly trips to Laconia, New Hampshire and always enjoyed taking trips with Lisa. One of his most memorable trips was their motorcycle excursion on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and even though it rained for most the trip, Herb and Lisa enjoyed every minute. When it came to his landscaping and yard at home, there was no one more dedicated than Herb. He could be found riding his tractor, making sure everything was perfect in the yard, or in his vegetable garden, growing his famous tomatoes. In the fair-weather months, Herb's love for the ocean led him to many camping trips to Sandy Neck Beach, spending countless hours watching the waves. During the winter months, nothing made Herb happier than plowing with his trusty Jeep Rubicon, "Ruby."
More than anything, Herb was a dedicated family man. He was a fantastic Dad to Steve and Stacy and loved spending time with them. His family extended to his dogs as well, Herb always carried cookies in his pockets for them, which the other neighborhood dogs quickly learned.
