As a young college graduate, Helena found a job as a teacher. She was employed by the Public School System in Williamsburg, MA and later in New London, CT. After marrying her husband, Tait, in 1949, she left her career to raise and care for her family. After her children got older, she worked for the Walpole Public School System as a one to one aide, assisting hearing impaired students for many years.

Helena had a talent for sewing. She had a small business that she ran out of her home on Lewis Avenue making wedding dresses, alterations, as well as doing some upholstry work, all to help her children go to college. She was known for her baking and as a lifelong learner, she was an avid reader. In her spare time she loved to knit and travel. One of her most memorable trips was to Ireland for her 75th birthday. In addition, Helena, along side her husband Tait, traveled across the United States, Canada, and into Alaska with their pride and joy, Dawn Marie. Family was most important to her, she loved to spend time with all of her family, and especially enjoyed the summer camping trips to New Hampshire.
