Helen Louise (Nolan) McQueeney

Helen Louise (Nolan) McQueeney passed away in her home under the care of VNA Hospice and her loving family on March 15. Born in 1933 in Newton, MA to Helen and William Nolan, she was one of 6 children. After her graduation from Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic High School, she worked as a secretary at Raytheon (Bemis), where she met John McQueeney. They married and raised three children in Walpole, MA, where they lived for 44 years until John (Jake) passed away in 2004. The Irving Drive neighborhood was a wonderful place for children to grow up with kids from many other families of the same age. Neighbors helped each other and trusted that their kids would be safe when they went outside to play. When her children became teenagers, Helen got a part-time job as a secretary for the Walpole Board of Health, a community role which she loved for many years.

Helen is survived by her daughter Kathy (Stratham, NH), daughter Barbara (Litchfield, NH - formerly of Clinton, MA), son Michael and daughter-in-law Mary (Heavey) of Londonderry, NH, and granddaughters, Kaitlyn (Kailua-Kona, HI), Elizabeth (Boston, MA) and Jennifer (Los Angeles, CA). Helen moved to Litchfield, NH in 2005 to be near Michael’s family, where she could spend lots of family time with her beloved granddaughters as they grew up.

In her “Walpole” days, she enjoyed bowling, quilting, crocheting, sunbathing at the beach, square dancing, and trips to Foxwoods Casino to play the slot machines. Then in her later years, she settled into watching her TV game shows (especially Wheel of Fortune), playing Boggle and cards with friends and family, jigsaw puzzles, and trying her luck with lottery scratch tickets. Again, she was blessed with wonderful neighbors in her 55+ community, Canberra Village.

Her Catholic faith was very important to her, influencing how she lived her life…with kindness and compassion for others. As a member of her church’s Legion of Mary organization, she prepared and delivered dinners to local families needing assistance. She also volunteered in the local food pantry. And she was known to brighten up many a doctor’s office whenever she had an appointment, by taking a batch of her famous Snickerdoodles cookies for the office staff to enjoy.

Helen was preceded in death by her brothers William Jr., Robert and Paul Nolan and her sister Ruth Landry. She is survived by her sister Irene Egan, and many nieces and nephews who loved her joyful spirit and positive outlook on life.
