Gertrude Carter Bullock

March 22, 1914 — July 15, 2013

Gertrude Carter Bullock, 99, died peacefully at her home at New Pond Village Walpole, MA on July 15, 2013. Born Gertrude Brandeis Ely (and known to friends and family as "Gert", "Geege" and "GeeGee") on March 22, 1914 in Harrisburg PA. She grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut and lived most of her married life in Milton and Dedham, Massachusetts. She married in 1937 (first beloved husband) Lewis Aaron Carter (deceased), of Milton for 45 years; and married to second beloved husband: Augustus George Bullock (deceased), Dedham, for 15 years.

She loved the lakes, trees and mountains of the Adirondacks and the beauty of Vermont, both of which she artfully painted in watercolors, her dogs, and horses--and excelled in equestrian competition. She attended Rosemary Hall, Greenwich; Connecticut; Oldfields School, Glencoe, Maryland and studied art in New York City.

She was a mother, housewife, watercolorist, entrepreneur, singer, and family-story teller. Her summers were spent at her camp on Spitfire Lake in the Adirondacks. She was bright, attractive (considered a beauty), gritty and determined, had a great sense of humor and bawdy wit, and reached out to people of all backgrounds.

She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and leaves a daughter and two sons: Katrina Ely Cameron (married to Duncan Cameron of Princeton, NJ; Lewis Aaron Carter, Jr. (married to Beverly Gilman) of South Dartmouth, MA; John Franklin Carter (married to Deborah Swift) of Lakeville, CT: her six grandchildren: Christopher Hamilton Knerr, Eliza Ely Carter Sullivan, Amanda Howe Carter Deluca, Caleb Swift Carter, Jacob Aaron Carter, Jesse Lawrence Carter, Matthew Emory Gilman; and seven great grandchildren: Spencer and Chloe Knerr, Eleanor and Angus Sullivan, Maya and Sage Carter, Samuel Carter; and her devoted helper and friend, Blanche Thibodeaux.

A gathering of friends and family will be held in July in the Boston area, and a Memorial Service at St. John's in The Wilderness, Paul Smiths, New York will be held Friday, August 30, 2013 at 11 AM.
