Gerard E. “Gerry” Murphy, Jr. age 83, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on April 24, 2019. Born in his family’s Lower Mills, Dorchester home on December 13, 1935, he was the son of the late Gerard E. and Agnes T. (Walsh) Murphy, Sr.
Gerry was raised in Milton, graduating Milton High School in 1954. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a Petty Officer 2nd Class on an Aircrafter Carrier during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged in 1965 he took a job with Boston Edison in South Boston while taking night classes at Boston College. Soon his job with Edison brought him to Walpole. He joined a local ski club where he met and started dating Patricia. They married October 7, 1967 settling in Walpole where they raised their family. In 1977 Gerry enlisted in the US Naval Reserves where he spent the end of his 20 year long naval career as a “Seabee”.
Gerry was very active in the Walpole community serving as a Call Firefighter and in the Fire Alarm Company. He was a member of the Norwood Elks and enjoyed taking part in their golf league in his off time. He enjoyed spending time at his cottage in Gilmanton, NH that he proudly built himself with his cousin Tom. Gerry was an avid skier, skiing well into his late 70’s, his favorite spot being Loon Mountain, Lincoln, NH. He enjoyed his annual vacation in Hawaii. Gerry most loved doting on and spending time his grandchildren.
Gerry is survived by his beloved wife Patricia Ann (Fallon) Murphy. Loving father of Paula M. Bolger and her husband Timothy of North Attleborough, Joseph L. Murphy and his wife Amy of Bourne, Gerard E. Murphy, III and his wife Michelle of Chesapeake Beach, MD. Cherished grandfather of Nicole, Kayla, Kyle, Mya, Dylan and Colton. Brother of Patricia Schick of Norwood, Kathleen Murphy, SND of Nashua, NH Jean Whitney and her husband Richard of Holbrook, James Murphy of Concord, NH, Deborah Murphy of Concord, NH, and the late Joseph L. Murphy and Mary E. Coughlin. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Gerry’s Life Celebration on Monday, April 29, 2019 from 4 to 8 PM and Tuesday, April 30, 2019 from 9 to 9:30 AM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Jude’s Church, 86 Main Street, Norfolk on April 30, 2019 at 10AM. Interment will be private at the request of the family.
