Georgia Mae Kingsbury Harp

Georgia Mae Kingsbury Harp, age 93, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2014 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth, Massachusetts.  She was the wife of 47 years of the late Oscar W. Harp and the sister of the late William F. “Bill” Kingsbury.  Her parents were the late Edna and William Kingsbury, formerly of Dedham, Massachusetts.

Georgia Mae had a long career in Country Music, which started when she attended Walpole High School.  After graduation, she had a radio program, first on WBSO, Babson Park which later became WORL and moved to Kenmore Square Boston.  Next, she was asked to join WBZ in Boston and was with them for many years broadcasting daily.  She was known as “The Girl With The White Guitar and Triple Yodel.”  During the war, she entertained in Veterans Hospitals throughout New England, sang at War Bond Rallies, and gave a ton of her fan mail to the Government Scrap Paper Drive.  She traveled extensively in N.E. and Canada at fairs, theaters, grange halls, and was known through her radio shows in all areas.  She also had her own TV show on WBZ-TV.  In 1984, she was inducted into the Massachusetts Country Hall of Fame, in 1987, she received the American Country Music Eagle Award for being a Pioneer in Country Music.  She was inducted into the Walpole High School Hall of Fame, and in 2009 was inducted into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame.

Georgia Mae joined the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in 1976 and served Contentment Chapter in Dedham as Regent for 2 terms.  She served on the State Board of DAR.  She was a member of Daughters of Founder’s and Patriots, Colonial Dames 17^th Century, New England Women, Court of Honor, Women Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, Magna Charta-Indian Wars, Colonial Wars, Ex-Regents Club, State Officers Club, and Colonial Clergy.  She held offices in all.

Georgia Mae had many hobbies- her music-needlepoint- she stitched the “Old State House” on the Freedom Trail Tapestry that is hung in the Boston State House.  She stitched a kneeler for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Dedham, and worked on a kneeler for the Old North Church.  She loved to bake and decorate cakes and made many wedding and birthday cakes for the family.  She loved taking pictures and when she and her husband traveled in their motor home across the country she took many videos.

Georgia Mae is survived by her Sister in Law Beatrice E. Kingsbury of Carver, -Brother in Law Tom Harp and his wife Peg of Evansville, Indiana, -Niece Virginia Melanson and husband Thomas of Walpole, Nephews Denny Brooks and Carol T. of North Attleboro, Fred and Carol Kingsbury of Walpole, many grear and great great nieces and nephews and one great great great nephew.  Also, Best Friend Celia Davino and her family of Walpole.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Georgia Mae’s Life Celebration on Monday, August 11, 2014 from 3-8 PM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole.  A Funeral Service will be held in the United Methodist Church of South Walpole, 1886 Washington Street, South Walpole on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 10:00 AM.  Interment will follow in Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Walpole Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 5, South Walpole, MA 02071.
