George Peter "Pete" Murray, 88, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Alliance Health at Maples in Wrentham, Massachusetts, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Norwood, Massachusetts on June 15, 1936, he was the son of George S. and Helmi (Flinck) Murray. Pete was raised in Norfolk, Massachusetts, where he found his love for the game of baseball as a young boy, playing on various town teams, as well as with the Boston Park League. He brought his passion for baseball to Walpole High School, where he met his future wife, Barbara A. Mackenzie, and graduated with the Class of 1954. Pete’s love for baseball continued after graduation, playing Legion Ball, taking part in the long-standing amateur league.
In the fall of 1954, Pete proudly enlisted in the United States Army, and served during the Korean War. As a paratrooper, he was stationed with the 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment, serving in Germany. He was honorably discharged in August 1957 with the rank of Sergeant, having also played in several more baseball games during his service. Following his honorable discharge, Pete returned home to his beloved Barbara, and he quickly enrolled in classes at Northeastern University, taking advantage of the GI Bill, and finding a way to continue playing baseball.
Pete married Barbara on November 8, 1959, in her home parish of Blessed Sacrament in Walpole. The young couple initially made their home in Norfolk, while Pete finished his coursework to obtain a Bachelor of Science with a focus on Electrical Engineering. Two years after his graduation from Northeastern, in 1964, the couple purchased their home in East Walpole, and Pete took a position with Lab for Electronics Corporation in Waltham.
To advance his career, Pete returned to his education, taking courses at Northeastern to earn his Master's Degree with a focus on Engineering Management, which he earned in 1969. Pete had a long and wonderful career with LFE, serving as Manager of Engineering for thirty two years before his retirement in 1999.
While home was in East Walpole, Pete and Barbara looked forward to escaping to their condo in North Conway, New Hampshire, overlooking Cathedral Ledge. Summers in New Hampshire were spent at Wentworth Golf Resort in Jackson Village, where Pete did his best to improve his game. However, the winters brought fun and excitement, as Pete would strap on his favorite skis and hit the slopes. Pete's ski adventures took him beyond New England to the mountains out West, where he tackled the slopes of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming, ultimately naming Jackson Hole, WY, as his favorite.
Pete truly was an all-around athlete through most of his life. His love for baseball, skiing, and hockey was something he was passionate about sharing with his family and friends. Pete was once called by a man from his hometown of Norfolk to give some advice to his young son, who happened to be left-handed. As a lefty himself, Pete jumped at the opportunity to help a young boy develop and realize his own potential. This young man went on to pitch for the Pawtucket Red Sox. Pete was patient and kind while providing ski lessons, making sure his family understood the basics and came down the slope safely.
Pete was the beloved husband of 65 years to Barbara A. (Mackenzie) Murray. He was the devoted brother of Joseph L. Murray and his wife, Joyce, of New Hampshire, the late James K. Murray and his surviving wife, Judith, of Norfolk, and the late Elizabeth Ann Glynn and her late husband, Jack. He is also survived by a large extended family on his wife’s side, along with many loving nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Pete's Celebration of Life on Saturday, January 11, 2025, from 9:00 am - 10:30 am in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at Blessed Sacrament Church, 10 Diamond Street, Walpole at 11:00 am. Interment will be at Saint Francis Cemetery in Walpole.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Pete's name may be made to The Eileen M. Hamlin Scholarship Fund, c/o Norfolk Credit Union, 18 Union St Suite 104, Norfolk, MA 02056.
