George Joseph. Jr., age 63, passed away peacefully in his Berkley, Massachusetts home on Tuesday, July 28, 2015. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on April 2, 1952, George was a very special person, not because he was born with Downs Syndrome, but because he was kind and gentle with a smile that endeared him to everyone. As a little boy, George loved playing baseball; actually he loved hitting the ball, but not chasing it. One of George's favorite times was the annual Father's Day cookout at Uncle Eddie's in Mansfield, where George loved his hot dogs while waiting for the baseball game to start. He loved to tease and be teased. George loved his family, and loved being in the middle of the action, such as the Fourth of July cookout at cousin Ed's. George was right at home with the Twiss family, celebrating Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and all other family get togethers. At the end of one of those special days, he always said "That was a good day."
George lived in several group homes and made many friends. He loved music and dancing, Elvis Presley, David Cassidy, and taking guitar lessons. He traveled to Graceland and the Grand Old Opry. He spent time at Cape Cod and New Hampshire in the summer. You could always interest him in a Dunkin Donuts Coffee Coolata or a McDonald's Fish Sandwich, and on Thanksgiving, a slice of mince pie.
George enjoyed going to work and making money; he held several jobs, including packing bags at supermarkets and sorting cans at Town Line Redemption Center, where he was voted Employee of the Month. Following a lengthy hospitalization three years ago, George moved to Jerome Street in Berkley. He quickly made this his home and began attending the day program, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He suffered through many hospitalizations in the past year which kept him from returning to the day program, but he never lost his smile.
George will always have a place in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known him and loved him.
Devoted son of the late George and Alice (Obuchon) Joseph.
Loving brother of Darlene and her husband Michael Twiss of East Walpole.
Cherished uncle of Melissa Cushing and her husband Edward of Stoughton and Christopher Twiss of Walpole and great uncle of Piper and Brynn Cushing.
Also survived by several cousins.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend George's Life Celebration on Friday, July 31, 2015 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole. A Graveside Service will follow in the Brookdale Cemetery in Dedham. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Special Olympics, 1133 19th Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20036.
