Frederick Pickett Stearns
Passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at the age of 85, he was a Walpole resident for over 45 years. Preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Sullivan Stearns and son Brian, 4 mos., fifty-three years ago. Son of the late Frederick A. and Luella (Pickett) Stearns of Melrose, MA. Loving father of Jeffrey Stearns and wife Marjorie of Mequon, WI, Frederick Stearns and wife Cindy, of Albuquerque, NM and Dana and wife Lisa Marie Stearns of Walpole, MA. Former husband of Dorrie (Lajoie) Stearns Upton of Jaffrey, NH. Beloved grandfather of Scott and wife Tansley, Eric, Christopher, Lianna, Henry, Samuel, Tyler and Christianne Faye Stearns. Also survived by his sister Jeanne Stearns Amadon Hall, cousins Ruth Stearns Beard, Marjorie Stearns Wood, Rosalie Stearns Wright, special nieces and nephews, their families, and friends. Born in Melrose, MA on March 11, 1922, Fred served during World War II in the European Theater of Operations as a sharpshooter and instructor ammunition NCO for an ordnance heavy maintenance company, participating in the Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland Campaigns. He returned home to complete his degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1946. He exercised his mechanical talents in the metals and controls and the safety engineering divisions of Texas Instruments, retiring after 42 years of service. He was passionate about the field of safety engineering and active at the national level in the Society of Safety Engineers and the National Safety Council. Fred became a Master Mason and was a member of the Bristol Lodge in Attleboro for over 50 years. His favorite pastimes included reading, gardening, woodworking, golf and walking with his dog Jennie. Fred was an active member of the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Providence, RI. His family will miss him terribly. They would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Sunrise Senior Living of Norwood, MA, for their unwavering compassion, support and care. Visitation will be Saturday, February 2 from 10:00 am to 11:30 at James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at The Epiphany Episcopal Church, Front Street, Walpole at noon. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Sunrise Senior Living of Norwood, 86 Saunders Rd., Norwood, Ma 02062, or St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 114 George Street , Providence, RI 02906.
