Florence Sundquist, age 95, passed away on August 23, 2015 in Norwood. Born in Mobile, AL on September 4, 1919 to the late Henry and Martha Huebner. When she was 12, she moved to Wisconsin where she graduated from Washington High School in Milwaukee and went on to earn a BS in Education in 1941 from the University of Wisconsin Madison. After college she enlisted in the US Marine Corps during WWII. She served as a S/Sgt until the end of the war. She settled in Walpole with her late husband, Verner Sundquist and raised her family. She worked as a substitute teacher for almost three decades for the Walpole School District.
After her husband's passing, she became very involved in senior activities. She served on the Council of Aging for over 20 years, the Board of HESSCO for 18 years, she was instrumental in increasing the recycling program in Walpole, creating food drives at the Senior Center, fought for tax abatement for seniors and served on the Local Emergency Planning Board. She created a Veterans Fellowship Group where, for over 15 years, she brought in speakers regarding all aspects of veterans affairs, local veterans trips and brought a Blackhawk helicopter to Walpole for the Veterans and schoolchildren to experience firsthand. She is a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Norwood.
She was dedicated to her family and traveled all over the world to visit them. She is preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Verner Sundquist. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Bangs and her husband Robert, and Cheryl Hall and her husband Ray. Cherished Grandmother of Jennifer Bangs, Linda Guebert, Valerie Taylor, Jackie Bowers, and Alex Hall and great Grandmother of Camille and Naomi Bowers.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Steward Home Care and Hospice and Ellis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Memorial service will be held in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole on September 2, 2015 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Massachusetts SPCA at MSPCA.org.
