Emma Rose DeVirgilio

August 25, 1924 — October 29, 2018

Emma Rose (Iarrobino) DeVirgilio, age 94, passed away at her home in Sisters, Oregon on Monday, October 29, 2018. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts on August 25, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Hjordis (Pretorius) Iarrobino. She was raised in the West Roxbury and Roslindale areas of Boston, Massachusetts and graduated from Roslindale High School.

Shortly after graduation, Emma married the love of her life, Louis DeVirgilio, on February 6, 1943. They initially made their home in Florida, as Louis was still on active duty in the United States Army. After his deployment, Emma returned to Massachusetts, settling in with the DeVirgilio family in Dedham. Upon Louis's return from the Army, the couple made their home in Norwood, Massachusetts before settling in Walpole, Massachusetts. As Emma's family continued to grow, she and Louis purchased a new home in Norwood, and Emma returned to her education, taking classes at Northeastern University to earn her degree. She graduated in 1976 with her Bachelor's Degree in Library Science. After graduation, Emma took a position with the Town of Norwood in the School Department, first working in the library of the Cleveland Elementary School and later working in the library of the Norwood South Junior High School.

Emma returned to school in the late 1980s, taking classes at Cambridge College, earning her Master's Degree with a focus on Psychology in 1989. She quickly found work at the Norcap Lodge in Foxborough, working as a substance abuse counselor. After her retirement, she and Louis moved to Jensen Beach, Florida in 1993 and returned to Walpole, Massachusetts in 2006. After Louis passed in 2015, Emma moved across the country to be with her daughter in Oregon.

In her spare time, Emma enjoyed reading, cooking, and volunteering with Meals on Wheels.
She loved to dance, especially Ballroom with her husband. In her most recent years, she enjoyed creating beautiful works of art with colored pencils and crayons. Most of all, Emma loved being surrounded by the ones she loved most and looked forward to hosting family gatherings around the holidays.
