Elsie M. (Lorenz) Wood, age 85, passed away peacefully at Sunrise of Norwood on Saturday, January 21, 2017. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 6, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Max and Elizabeth (Rubel) Lorenz. As a young girl, Elsie lived in Beverly, MA and Rye Beach, NH before moving to Portsmouth, NH. She graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1948 and continued her education at Mt. Holyoke College in Hadley, MA. Elsie earned her Bachelor's Degree in 1952 from the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Elsie spent many happy summers enjoying the camp built by her father on New Pond in Walpole, MA. It was there that she met and married her husband, Russell Wood in 1955. She was incredibly proud of the McKinley Avenue home she and Russell built, where they raised 3 children, cared for many Labradors and spent countless hours tending to her beautiful gardens.
Elsie was a laboratory technician and worked for years at the Pondville Hospital in Norfolk, but her love for dogs eventually drew her to work helping run the family owned business, New Pond Kennels next door to her home. In 1979 she took over running the kennel business full time and boarded dogs for over 30 years until her retirement at age 78 in 2010.
Elsie enjoyed camping with her young family on Nauset Beach in Orleans, MA, water skiing, cross country skiing, and trips to Germany to see her family. Elsie was also an avid bird watcher and accomplished photographer and a member of the National Audubon Society. Later in life she loved her visits with her sister Romie and husband Philip Sanford to Alstead, NH where they canoed and enjoyed nature.
However most of all, she loved being at home with her family and dogs and treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren.
Loving mother of Linda Wood and husband Peter Fargo of Walpole, David and wife Kelly Wood of Orleans, and Ken Wood and partner Nancy Blaydes of Wrentham. Cherished grandmother of 7 and great grandmother of 5.
Sister of the late Rosemarie (Romie) and her husband Philip Sanford of Walpole and her 2 nephews, John and Eric.
All services for Elsie will be private at the request of the family.
