Ellen B. (Moran) Delaney, of Walpole, passed away peacefully at home on November 28, 2018 at the age of 97. Devoted daughter of the late John T. and Annie M. (Diegnan) Moran. Ellen is the beloved wife of the late James H. Delaney with whom she shared 60 wonderful years of marriage. Loving mother of Jay Delaney and his wife Kate of Walpole, Kathryn A. Delaney of West Roxbury, Jeanne E. Delaney of Plymouth, and Mary E. Cogan and her husband Patrick H. of Milton. Cherished grandmother of Jim Delaney, Tarin Delaney, Colleen Delaney, Kevin Cogan, Grace Cogan, and Dennis Cogan. Dear sister of Anne T. Swift of North Attleboro and the late John L. Moran, Catherine M. Swift, Thomas J. Moran, and James F. Moran. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Ellen graduated from Millis High School and Framingham Union Hospital School of Nursing. She had a fulfilling career at Milford Hospital and later at Norwood Hospital where she was promoted to Head Nurse of the children’s ward. By chance, she met her future husband Jim Delaney at a bowling alley when he was home for a week’s leave from the Army. Their five-day romance endured distance and time as Jim returned to active duty. They were married on September 30,1950. In 1958, they opened the James H. Delaney Funeral Home in Walpole. Together they built a successful business using the same pillars of their happy marriage: mutual respect, teamwork, compassion, and love.
Ellen’s life was marked by dignity, high standards, and an irrepressible streak of Irish fun. Her timeless elegance, courage, strength, resilience, deep loyalty to family and friends, and ballroom dance steps with her beloved partner Jim will live on.
