Elizabeth D. "Betty" Maleiko, age 87, passed away peacefully in her East Walpole, Massachusetts home on Monday, October 10, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on July 23, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John F. and Nora A. (Ahearn) McCarthy. She was raised in West Roxbury and graduated from Boston High School of Practical Arts with the Class of 1946. She went on to attend Framingham State College and took a position with the New England Telephone Company in the late 1940's.
Betty enjoyed going to dances with her friends at Mosley's Ballroom in Dedham. One night while attending a dance in the late 40's she met a handsome young man who swept her off her feet, named John P. Maleiko, but everyone knew him as Gary. Betty and Gary were married on October 15, 1951 and made their home together in Norwood. Betty left her job with the telephone company to become a stay at home mom, raising her six children. She was the picture perfect homemaker, keeping a well maintained home for her family, while always making sure she was at her best. She and her family looked forward to their week long trip to West Dennis every summer, where Betty would continue her role of perfect homemaker even away from her own home. As her children grew up, Betty returned to New England Telephone working as a manager's clerk until her retirement in 1991.
As a devoted Catholic, Betty attended church at her parish, Saint Catherine of Siena, in Norwood regularly and encouraged her children to do the same. She always told them that she didn't need gifts for various holidays, but rather their prayers. Her world revolved around her family, she loved spending time with them and providing them all with home cooked meals whenever she could. She and Gary had a pool installed in their backyard in Norwood, often hosting their children and grandchildren as well as some of their friends. Betty also loved to shop and was always looking for a "good buy," a trait that she enjoyed passing down to her daughters. In 2000, Betty and Gary sold their home in Norwood and settled into an in law suite at their daughter, Beth's, home in East Walpole. This allowed them to be closer to their ever growing family. Betty truly treasured the time that she spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren as they were always able to put a smile on her face.
